ECU OA: George Okoth
Majors: Dance and business management
Hometown: Nairobi, Kenya
Why did you choose ECU and what are some things that you love most about ECU? I chose ECU because it offered the perfect balance between strong academics and a vibrant arts program, especially in dance. What I love most about ECU is the supportive community, the passion of the faculty, and how easy it is to feel like you belong here, whether you are from down the street or across the world.
What do you remember from your own orientation that made you want to be an OA? Even though I didn’t get the chance to attend orientation myself, I have come to realize just how important that experience can be. Knowing that someone has your back, especially when everything feels new and uncertain, can make a big difference. ECU offers so many resources and support systems, and being an OA is my way of making sure others know they are not alone, there’s always someone here who understands what they’re going through and is ready to help.
How will your experiences shape your approach as an OA? As someone who’s moved far from home and had to adjust to a new environment, I understand how important it is to have someone who is encouraging, approachable and ready to listen. My experiences as a student leader and resident advisor have taught me how to build trust and create a welcoming space, skills I’ll bring with me as an OA.
What do you hope incoming students and family members take away from orientation?
I hope they leave feeling confident, informed and genuinely excited about becoming part of the Pirate Nation. More importantly, I want them to know they’re not alone, there’s a whole community here ready to support them every step of the way.
