ECU OA: Marisol Leon

Major: Nursing (intended)

Hometown: Miami to Charlotte

Why did you choose ECU and what are some things that you love most about ECU? I chose ECU for the nursing program! I am very passionate about helping others and ECU is the best place to get opportunities for helping others. I love ECU because everyone is so helpful and transparent, so it is easy to ask for help and get the help that you need. There are also so many opportunities to meet new people and to make connections that can help you in the long run.

What do you remember from your own orientation that made you want to be an OA? I remember how scared I was when I first came to orientation. As a first-generation student I did not know what to ask or where to start but I got the help I needed by simply asking around and going to sessions that related to me. I want to be the OA that anyone can go to and feel comfortable with! I also would love the opportunity to continue helping first-generation students since it is a scary but awesome experience.

How will your experiences shape your approach as an OA? I will definitely use my experiences to apply to my interactions with incoming students. It’s easier to handle a situation when you have been in it yourself! It also gives you room to grow and understand the situation.

What do you hope incoming students and family members takeaway from orientation? Trust us, yourself and your student! It’s a scary time for everyone but it is the best place to learn independence and self-accountability. Communication is the best thing for everyone!
