Three Minute Thesis competition showcases grad student research
GREENVILLE, N.C. (10/28/2024) — East Carolina University’s Graduate School will host the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition Nov. 4 from 1-4 p.m. in the Main Campus Student Center ballrooms. This event showcases graduate students presenting their research in a concise and engaging format to a broad audience. The event is free and open to the public.
The 3MT competition challenges participants to explain their research in just three minutes using one static slide. This unique format not only hones students’ presentation skills, but also promotes effective communication of complex ideas to non-specialist audiences. The presentations are scored by a panel of judges using a common rubric. The winner of the 3MT competition is invited to participate in the annual 3MT competition hosted by the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools.
“3MT is a fantastic opportunity for our graduate students to distill their research into an engaging narrative,” said Dr. Debra Jackson, dean of the ECU Graduate School. “We encourage all campus and community members to attend and witness some of the outstanding scholarship generated by our emerging scholars.”
Event Highlights:
- Engaging presentations from graduate students across various disciplines
- Audience participation and Q&A
- Prizes for top presenters
Originating at the University of Queensland in 2008, the annual 3MT competition is held at hundreds of universities worldwide. ECU’s first 3MT competition was in 2016.
