Photography exhibits display Wootten’s work
Photography by Bayard Wootten, one of North Carolina’s most influential photographers, is on display at the East Carolina University main campus library. The exhibition on the second floor, titled “Light and Air,” features a collection of captivating photographs exclusively showcasing North Carolina subjects. Additionally, another exhibit titled “The joy is in the going” can be found on the first floor in the research and instructional services area.
The showcased photographs are on loan from UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries. Visitors to the ECU main campus library have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Wootten’s remarkable work until May 15.
Born in 1875 in New Bern, Wootten made significant contributions to the field of photography in North Carolina during the first half of the 20th century. Notably, she was the first woman to capture aerial photographs, solidifying her place in history. The exhibits prominently highlight eastern North Carolina scenes and individuals, providing a unique glimpse into region and state history and culture.
To celebrate these exhibitions, a reception is April 16 at 3 p.m. in the Janice Hardison Faulkner Gallery, located on the library’s second floor, with insight and a talk from UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries the photographic archivist Stephen Fletcher.
