Ledonia Wright Cultural Center hosts first mixed-media student art exhibit

Students at East Carolina University are displaying their artwork in the “Black Resistance: A Celebration of Black History” exhibit in the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center (LWCC). This is the first exhibit hosted by the LWCC and is composed of mixed-media pieces created by ECU students.

Students were able to interpret the theme, inspired by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), which was founded by Carter G. Woodson in 1915.

Through their interpretations, the artists created collages, sculptures and even quilts. Their creativity and talent allowed them to represent their ideas of “Black Resistance.”

In a quilt created by ECU student Fosua Dadson, the embroidery and colors reflect the name, “Hues of Resilience.” In the artist’s statement, Dadson said, “Most of the quilt blocks are green. Green is the color of renewal, tranquility and resilience.”

While the pieces are inspired by the overall theme, they also contain personal aspects from the artists’ lives. “This quilt was also made for my mother, because of the strong and resilient woman she is. As someone who moved to a new country for the sake of her children, she is the epitome of resilience,” Dadson said.

The “Black Resistance: a Celebration of Black History” exhibit will be in the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center located in the Main Campus Student Center, Suite 100, until Feb. 24.
