Katie Council
From cheerleading squad to a squad of scholars, Katie Council is heading to East Carolina University with a spirit of “servire” in mind.
Council plans to study biology with a focus on pre-pharmacy. Pharmacy school is on her agenda after graduation. “I have seen how the proper medication can improve the quality of life for people and my ultimate goal is to help improve the conditions for as many people as possible during my lifetime,” she said.
Council studied social science as a summer student in the Governor’s School West program at High Point University, where she researched, discussed and debated pressing social issues and explored different cultures and lifestyles. Her resume is brimming with involvement that proves Council’s dedication to leadership and service, earning her spot among the EC Scholars cohort.
EC Scholars is the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at ECU. The four-year merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Recipients receive an Honors College scholarship and a stipend for study abroad for a total value of nearly $64,000.
“When I visited ECU’s campus on Selection Sunday, I immediately felt valued, wanted and appreciated,” said Council. “The endless opportunities available at ECU are superior to any other competitive universities I applied to, and I knew that the support I would receive over the next four years would be exceptional compared to the other schools.
“I knew I wanted to join a community that cares for and supports its students, and ECU has shown me that this is what they are committed to doing.”
At ECU, Council looks forward to being involved in clubs and organizations that improve her professional and personal goals, such as the Pre-Pharmacy Club and possibly the Student Government Association. She is also excited about joining a Christian campus ministry, such as Reformed University Fellowship or FUSE College Ministry.
After 11 years of cheerleading, she’s naturally interested in trying out for the ECU cheerleading team or in being part of the ECU club cheerleading team.
But family comes first, as Council plans to spend the summer camping and bonding with her family, especially her beloved grandparents.
Council is the 18-year-old daughter of Brandy and David Council of Washington.
“As an EC Scholar, I am looking forward to being part of a program and community that serves, supports and encourages one another.”
