ECU also is one of the top four nationally ranked public universities in North Carolina, along with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C. State University and UNC Wilmington, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2022 Best Colleges rankings released on Monday.

ECU ranked as a Top Performer in Social Mobility — 55th out of 201 universities — placing it in the top 30% of schools in the category considered in the Best Colleges ranking. This is the third year that U.S. News evaluated how well schools graduated students who received federal Pell Grants.

Pell Grants typically are awarded to students from households whose family incomes earn less than $50,000 annually, with most going to students with family incomes of less than $20,000 a year.

Overall, ECU is listed 107th among 209 top public schools, and 213th out of 391 national universities — up from 109th and 217th, respectively, last year. ECU tied with several other schools in both categories.

The following factors are evaluated for the national rankings: graduation and retention rates; social mobility; graduation rate performance (comparison of actual to predicted six-year graduation rate); undergraduate academic reputation; faculty resources; student selectively; financial resources per student; average alumni giving rate; and graduate indebtedness.

New this year, nursing was added to the discipline-specific rankings of undergraduate-level programs that U.S. News computes. ECU’s nursing program ranked 76th out of 694 schools.

In other undergraduate program rankings, which are based solely on the judgments of deans and senior faculty at peer institutions:

  • ECU’s engineering programs ranked 109th out of 239 institutions.
  • ECU’s business program ranked 212th out of 514 institutions.

In another ranking released Sept. 8 by Forbes, ECU was listed 315th out of 600 schools in America’s Top Colleges. ECU was in the top four public institutions in North Carolina in the Forbes ranking.
