East Carolina University is included in the 2021 edition of The Best 386 Colleges, an annual guidebook published by the Princeton Review, an educational services company known for its tutoring, test prep courses, books and other student resources.
The Princeton Review chooses colleges based on data collected annually from administrators about their institutions’ academic offerings as well as student surveys about campus and community experiences.
“ECU is very proud of our students, faculty and staff who are at the heart of such positive outcomes,” Interim ECU Chancellor Ron Mitchelson said. “We are committed to excellence in our instruction and research, and service in communities across eastern North Carolina and the state. We provide a nurturing campus where our students can learn and make lifelong connections. It’s gratifying to be recognized for our emphasis on student success at the national level.”
ECU’s two-page profile in the book, released Aug. 18, highlights the most frequent answers given by ECU students to survey questions. The list includes: “Easy to get around campus,” “Everyone loves the Pirates,” and “School is well run.” Students also provide comments about academics, life on campus and the student body.
The Princeton Review does not rank colleges from 1 to 386. “We believe all 386 schools in the book are academically outstanding. But we don’t think academics should be the exclusive reason for choosing a school — and in most cases, it isn’t,” publishers said. “Among other crucial factors (such as location, cost and size), the campus culture is very important. The schools featured in The Best 386 Colleges — our picks of the cream of the crop colleges and universities — comprise only the top 13% of all four-year colleges in the nation. These are all very different schools with different and wonderful things to offer.”
Other North Carolina schools included in the guidebook: Davidson College, Duke University, Elon University, Guilford College, High Point University, North Carolina State University, UNC Asheville, UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Greensboro, Wake Forest and Warren Wilson College.
Last year, the Miller School of Entrepreneurship in ECU’s College of Business was recognized by the Princeton Review and Entrepreneur magazine as one of the Top 50 Undergraduate Schools for Entrepreneurship in the nation.
ECU also was included on Princeton Review’s Best 385 Colleges, Best Southeastern Colleges and Green Colleges lists in 2019.
