CARES ACT FUNDING
In spring of 2020, the U.S. Department of Education released the first wave of Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funding. In coordination with the UNC System, ECU implemented mechanisms to deliver these funds to students. ECU has received approximately $19.4 million, of which $9.7 million was specifically reserved to provide students with emergency financial aid grants. We have distributed $8.9 million dollars over the last four months.
- East Carolina University has a small amount of CARES Act Funding remaining that needs to be distributed. With an increase of online and hybrid classes, we would like to prioritize access to technology and addressing connectivity needs for our students.
- The remaining CARES funds will be distributed in small awards of $500 each, to be used specifically for technology and connectivity materials or services (purchase of laptops, printers, scanners, web cams, hot spots or additional internet service.)
- To be eligible for CARES grants, students must be eligible to receive federal financial aid and have filed a current year FAFSA with ECU. More details on the CARES process, eligibility, and specific criteria are available here. Students (undergraduate and graduate) with questions should email covid19grants@ecu.edu.
- We have created a clear and simple application process so that students may seek support easily. Again, this application is only for technology and connectivity needs. We will award until the fund is exhausted, and applications will be prioritized by individual financial need.
- The award application will be open for a limited time from 8 a.m. on Aug. 17, 2020, until 5 p.m. on Aug. 21, 2020. If you previously received CARES funds for technology or connectivity needs (CAET), please do not re-apply.
- We will process this quickly and minimize delays. Awarding of the grants will begin within the 10 days of the close of the application. Recipients will see the amount of their grant posted to their University account before it is disbursed. Students are encouraged to verify their banking information and update their mailing addresses.
We will keep you posted as we have more opportunities to share or information to pass along. Please continue to monitor your email, follow EastCarolina social media channels, and regularly check our Coronavirus website for the latest updates.
Please note application link will open beginning 8 a.m. Aug. 17.
