ECU to host deaf activist Nyle DiMarco

East Carolina University will host speaker Nyle DiMarco on Feb. 19 on the main and health sciences campuses.

DiMarco, a deaf activist and winner of “Dancing with the Stars” and “America’s Next Top Model,” empowers audiences to believe they can do and be anything they want in life, no matter the obstacle.

With a passion for language, literacy and advocacy within the deaf community and beyond, DiMarco shares his barrier-breaking story as a deaf man who has risen above stereotypes to take the world by storm.

Believing that his deafness is “an asset rather than a limitation,” he will talk about building a bridge between the deaf and hearing by shining a light on not only the struggles, but also the triumphs of the deaf culture. DiMarco will also help audiences explore the importance of a sense of community, a commitment to goals, and belief in oneself.

Sponsors include the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center, the Student Activities Board and the Health Sciences Campus. Both presentations are free and open to the ECU community as well as the general public.

  • Wednesday, Feb. 19, at noon in the East Carolina Heart Institute (ECHI) auditorium: “Technology and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community” – Born into a multigenerational deaf family, DiMarco views advances in technology as a means of bridging the deaf and hearing worlds.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 19, 7 p.m. in the Main Campus Student Center ballrooms: “Living Out Loud” – As an activist and an out queer man, his message is for anyone struggling with who they are.

Note to the Media: Nyle DiMarco will be available to speak to the media on Feb. 19 at 6:15 p.m. in the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center in the Main Campus Student Center.
