Dr. Grant Hayes, dean of the East Carolina University College of Education, has been appointed as acting provost and senior vice chancellor of academic affairs, effective Nov. 6.

Hayes has served as dean of the College of Education since 2015. Before arriving at ECU, he held positions as a professor and administrator at the University of Central Florida and at James Madison University. He earned his doctoral, master’s and educational specialist degrees from the University of South Carolina, and his bachelor’s degree from Limestone College.

“I could not be more pleased than to have Dr. Grant Hayes accept the important responsibilities that come with his appointment as acting provost and senior vice chancellor,” said Dr. Ron Mitchelson, interim chancellor. “I have complete confidence in his talent, his work ethic and his commitment to our mission. In fact, he has lived the mission on a daily basis since joining us. I know that I look forward to working with him as part of our senior leadership team.”

Hayes said he is honored and humbled to be asked to step into the role during Mitchelson’s tenure as interim chancellor. Filling in for Hayes as acting dean of the College of Education will be Dr. Art Rouse, a member of the COE faculty since 2005 and the college’s current associate dean for graduate education and faculty affairs.
