Alumni Association tees off for scholarships
The East Carolina University Alumni Association hosted the annual Purple Gold Golf Tournament on Friday, Oct. 18 at the Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Greenville, where teams of golfers played for prizes, pride and tradition. The event, which had to be rescheduled to Hurricane Dorian, is a main fundraiser for the association’s scholarship fund.
“These events are important fundraisers for us. We had a few new teams playing this year, so it’s nice to show them how fun this event is and to have them meet some of our scholarship students,” said Shawn Moore, director for scholarship and signature programs for the alumni association.
One student, Halle Nobles, a senior majoring in international business and German, said an alumni association scholarship is helping her stay debt-free and has opened doors to networking opportunities.
“This is a strong community that’s proud to be from ECU. Pirates look out for one another. When I graduate, I will definitely participate in this event because I know the direct effect it has on students,” she said.
Since its establishment in 2005, the program has awarded 318 scholarships totaling over $481,000.
On Friday, Chad Merritt ’05 was playing on a team with friends and said the course was challenging but fun. Another alumnus, Chris Kellam ’10 ’17, celebrated his birthday on the course. His wife, Jo, who is deployed in the military, even arranged to have someone bring him his favorite drink to tee off (a Crown and Coke).
Bryon Coleman, a player from event sponsor North Carolina Farm Bureau, was participating in his fourth tournament.
“The conditions were great, there was great weather and good fellowship. The alumni association always does a great job,” he said.
