ECU cleaning up after Hurricane Dorian
East Carolina University officials monitored the effects of Hurricane Dorian throughout the night and completed interior and exterior inspections of campus buildings and infrastructure this morning as the storm moved out of Pitt County.
Cleanup is underway. ECU’s main and health sciences campuses experienced minor damage which is not unusual for a storm of this size. Leaks in some campus buildings, flooding in flood prone roadways and parking lots, and fallen tree limbs were the most common damage reported.
“While we are mindful of the devastation that Hurricane Dorian brought to many communities, we are grateful that ECU has survived the worst of the storm in fairly good shape,” said Dan Gerlach, interim chancellor. “I am especially grateful to our facilities and grounds staff and ECU Police for their hard work before, during and after the storm to prepare us all and keep us safe. While we canceled classes, our dining and residential staff are serving students as we recover.”
Students and employees are reminded to stay safe and use their best judgment. Monitor local weather and road closures. Never drive through standing water. Do not swim in floodwaters; you can drown due to swift moving water and/or entanglement. Floodwaters also often contain raw sewage and hazardous chemicals.
Campus will be open for normal operations Saturday, Sept. 7, including football gameday activities.
