Dymon Blango

Dymon Blango of Greenville has a head start on her college career at East Carolina University.

A graduate of the Pitt County Early College High School, Blango already has associate’s degrees in science and biotechnology from Pitt Community College.

On top of that, she’s an EC Scholar – the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at ECU.

Blango, 18, is the daughter of Escalera Blango and Bianca Murchison-Lopez of Greenville. She said she chose ECU because of the many opportunities the university offers to network locally and globally “and its reputation for molding some of the world’s most exceptional, well-rounded, well-educated leaders,” she added.

While talking about being selected as an EC Scholar, Blango reprised the old saying about much being required from those to whom much is given.

“Being an EC Scholar means that I have been chosen to lead and live an exemplary lifestyle congruent to a dedicated, accountable, enlightened student of East Carolina University,” she said. “I feel as if I have taken on the great responsibility to give back and benefit others, which is an honor.”

A four-year merit scholarship program, EC Scholars recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Recipients receive an Honors College scholarship for four years along with a stipend for study abroad for a total value of nearly $63,000.

Before she starts classes in August, Blango will be traveling to the Bahamas, Tennessee and Georgia to recharge and attend Christian youth conferences.

At ECU, she looks forward to joining international clubs, making new friends and watching Pirates sports. She plans to study abroad in Peru, Columbia or Puerto Rico, where she wants to practice her Spanish and learn more about the Hispanic culture. She plans to major in biology and minor in forensic science.

Her goal is to join the FBI as a forensic biologist. “Later in life, I long to become a motivational speaker, encouraging others to follow their dreams all over the world,” she said.

“I feel as if I have taken on the great responsibility to give back and benefit others, which is an honor.”
