Caleb Myers
One can assume that Vancouver, British Columbia, will always hold a special place in the heart of 17-year-old Caleb Myers. He was having breakfast at a Tim Hortons when he got the news that he was an EC Scholar.
“As my mom and I were in Canada, I had my grandma check the mail every day to see if a letter had arrived,” said Myers. “She (Caleb’s grandmother) called me that morning and explained the envelope was thick. When she opened it, I heard the fight song play through the phone. I was shocked. I knew my interview went well, but I knew the selection process was competitive. I called Luke Fogarty, my Selection Sunday host, and told him the news. It turned out he already knew, but it made for a pretty fantastic day.”
It’s fitting that Myers received his good news outside of the United States. Along with hospitality management, he wants to concentrate his studies on international business. He also plans to take full advantage of the study abroad opportunity that comes with being an EC Scholar.
“I either want to study Spanish and business in Spain or take a voyage with Semester at Sea,” said Myers. “Both experiences will allow me to meet people from all over the globe while practicing my second language.”
EC Scholars is the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at ECU. The four-year merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Recipients receive an Honors College scholarship, along with a stipend for study abroad, for a total value of nearly $63,000.
“I was lucky enough to have many options when it came time to choose where I wanted to spend my next four years,” said Myers. “ECU offered one big thing that all of those other schools didn’t: a close-knit, family-like community that is passionate about learning.”
In addition to being admitted as an EC Scholar, Myers has been named a Business Scholar, offered jointly by the College of Business and Honors College. Recipients receive a scholarship of $12,000 above the EC Scholar award as well as guaranteed acceptance in ECU’s MBA or MSA program after meeting the requirements for an undergraduate business degree.
Sticking to his international instincts, Myers intends to continue his global treks over the summer before settling down in Greenville in mid-August.
“I will be doing a lot of traveling this summer,” he said. “I plan on visiting Australia, Amsterdam and Israel in the months to come.”
After Myers steps foot on ECU’s campus, he plans to spend the next four years in an environment that will more than prepare him for a future in international business.
“Being surrounded by a family of 20 students passionate about all sorts of amazing things, I have no doubt that I will have a fantastic college experience,” he said.
Myers is the son of Curt and Jenny Myers.
