Membership is by peer selection in the third year of medical school. During their fourth year, members are responsible for executing a project that exemplifies humanism, participating in National Solidarity Week for Compassionate Patient Care and “Thank a Resident Day.”
“Becoming a member of Brody’s Gold Humanism Honor Society is more than just a popularity contest,” said Dr. Hellen Ransom, assistant professor of bioethics at Brody and GHHS faculty advisor. “The peer nominations go through a vetting process that includes medical staff, administration support, faculty and housekeeping staff because we want to ensure that our GHHS members are true exemplars of compassion for the greater Greenville community.”
2019 recipients of the Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award are Jennifer Wittwer, MD, and Maggie Clifton, DO.

Also recognized were the 2019 recipients of the Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. Family medicine resident Dr. Maggie Clifton and internal medicine-pediatrics resident Dr. Jennifer Wittwer were selected by third and fourth-year medical students for demonstrating an exemplary commitment to teaching and humanitarian treatment of patients and families, students and colleagues.
Established in 2002 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, the GHHS is an international association of individuals and medical school chapters whose members are selected as exemplars of empathy, compassion, altruism, integrity, service, excellence and respect in their relationships with patients and others in the field of medicine.
The Brody chapter of the organization was founded in 2011.
