East Carolina University to celebrate International Women’s Day
ECU’s fifth annual recognition of International Women’s Day will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 12. Panel discussions will be held in the Main Campus Student Center, Room 249, with lunch served in the ballroom.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Better Balance, Better World.”
Throughout the day, four panel discussions will be held with speakers that include ECU faculty, staff and students.
“We are excited to have a number of students speaking, including members of Elite Pirates and She’s the First,” said Dr. Donna Kain, ECU associate professor and member of the board organizing the event.
Dr. Valorie Vojdik, Waller Lansden Distinguished Professor of Law, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is the event’s keynote speaker.
Following lunch at 12:30 p.m., Vojdik will discuss “Women’s Boots on the Ground: How Shannon Faulkner’s lawsuit against the Citadel opened the doors for women.”
Vojdik has litigated numerous cases involving sex discrimination and civil rights in both state and federal courts. She served as lead counsel in federal court to Shannon Faulkner and other women who successfully challenged the males-only admission policy of The Citadel: The Military College of South Carolina.
International Women’s Day is sponsored by the Gender Studies Executive Board with support from the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, Department of English and the Women and Gender Office. The event is free and open to the public. To view the full schedule and register for the International Women’s Day program visit https://bit.ly/2NkPFNo.
