5TH STREET CLOSURE
Town Creek Culvert Project, Phase 1
Beginning Monday, Feb. 25, the City of Greenville Public Works Department will close a portion of 5th Street between Reade and South Holly streets at East Carolina University’s main campus to continue work on the Town Creek Culvert Project. The closure is estimated to last through mid-June weather and work schedule permitting. The construction on 4th Street has concluded and opened to traffic to accommodate the 5th Street closure.
The 5th Street closure will impact pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area. The vehicular detour directs traffic from Elm Street to 1st Street, drivers can then use Reade or Cotanche streets, both one-way, to continue their route. Pedestrians will be directed around the construction using South Holly and Reade streets.
Will the sidewalks on 5th Street near Reade be open?
No. Sidewalks on both sides of 5th Street between Reade and South Holly streets will be closed. Detour signs will be up to direct pedestrians. The detour will encourage you to use 4th and Reade streets. Please pay attention to signage directing pedestrians to ADA accessible sidewalks and crosswalks.
Will the ECU B1 parking lot at the corner of Reade and 4th streets be open?
Yes. The lot will remain open and will be accessible using 4th Street.
Can we take photos in front of the stone ECU sign at the corner of Reade Circle and 5th Street?
No. Unfortunately, during the first phase (current phase) and second phase (beginning later this spring) of the Town Creek Culvert Project, the area around the sign will be closed for safety reasons. There are several alternatives for great photos including the new ECU letters in front of the Main Campus Student Center or the ECU sign in front of the Jenkins Fine Arts Building. There are no plans to remove the stone ECU sign.
Will traffic back up near 5th Street and on the detour routes?
Probably. We encourage those who do not absolutely need to be in the area to find an alternate route and avoid the areas of 5th, 4th and 1st streets if possible. Expect heavy traffic during typical busy times of day, between 7:30-8 a.m., noon to 1 p.m., and 5-6 p.m.
Will 5th Street be closed during commencement and dorm move out?
Yes. The project is anticipated to last through the middle of June.
Can we still get to the ECU buildings and parking areas on 5th Street between Reade Street and Elm Street?
Yes. You will need to follow the detour route to Elm Street to access these areas.
