ECU to stage full-scale active assailant training exercise

East Carolina University will stage a full-scale, emergency training exercise Tuesday, Dec. 18 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the College Hill area of main campus.

College Hill Drive and all parking lots in that area will be closed and sections of 10th Street, 14th Street and portions of the parking areas at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium will be affected. The purpose of the training is to ensure coordinated, timely and effective response in the event of a real crisis situation.

There will be significant law enforcement, fire and emergency service personnel present during the exercise which will include realistic weapons and police in tactical gear. The sound of simulated gunfire may be heard by those near the area.

The ECU Alert emergency notification system will be activated during the exercise. Signs will be posted in the area to notify the public. The exercise is closed to the campus community and the general public.

The training will involve an active assailant scenario. Multiple departments at ECU and local and state agencies will participate including Greenville Police, Greenville Fire/Rescue, Pitt County Schools, Pitt County Sheriff’s Office, Vidant Medical Center, N.C. Emergency Management and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
