FIRST-GENERATION GRADUATE

Shydeik Wood found new experiences at ECU

“Involvement is the key,” said Shydeik Wood, a College of Business student who will graduate this fall with a concentration in marketing.

During his time at ECU, Wood lived by this credo. He was a marching pirate, which led to him being a drum major his junior year. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha, as well as a member of Kappa Kappa Psi, the national honorary band service fraternity. He sang with the ECU men’s choir and played with the pep band for three years. Plus, he had time to focus on his degree and intern with Speedway and ECU’s athletics department.

I had a sense of belonging to the university, which motivated me to keep pushing forward.

For the past three years, Wood also has been an orientation assistant where he helped with the transition and development of first-year students.

“Activities make you a well-rounded person,” said Wood. “It gives you a chance to connect with people.”

As a first-generation student, Wood was hoping ECU would not only provide an education but also new experiences away from home.

When asked if those hopes were fulfilled, he provided an emphatic “yes.” He said the instructors showed commitment beyond the classroom and the university provided numerous student organizations where one can get involved.
