ECU Center for Survey Research advisory board holds first meeting

A newly formed advisory board for East Carolina University’s Center for Survey Research (CSR) held its first meeting on April 13.

The board is composed of local business leaders, government officials, political consultants, ECU alumni and nationally recognized academics. Members are Jonathan Brooks, Jim Chesnutt, Mayor P.J. Connelly, Professor Tom Eamon, Jessica Ennis, Daniel Fussell, Joseph Henderson, Professor Paul Herrnson, Wayne Holloman, Tucker Middleton, Patrick Sebastian, Pax Wade, Glen Webb, Priscilla East Watts, Ebony West and Professor Tinsley Yarbrough.

The center, housed in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences, supports university scholars, public agencies and private clients in carrying out research. Faculty members suggest appropriate research methods and sampling strategies for projects and assist in the development and implementation of mail, telephone and web-based surveys, questionnaires, public opinion polls and focus groups.

The advisory board will work to improve and expand the center’s current programs and services. Members will provide guidance and resources to create the ECU Poll, which will conduct polling at the local, state and national level on issues ranging from politics and business to health and education.

With the development of the ECU Poll, the center hopes to raise the university’s national profile. The ECU Poll will expand educational opportunities for ECU students who will have the opportunity to design research projects, develop questionnaires, learn how random sampling works, monitor data collection and conduct data analysis.

A recent donation to the CSR will assist in the creation of the ECU Poll. A story about the $100,000 donation made by board member Wayne Holloman and his wife Sherry may be read online at https://blog.ecu.edu/sites/ecunow/blog/2018/02/27/could-a-poll-boost-ecus-national-reputation/.
