ECU Police charge man with kidnapping

On Sunday, Feb. 4, East Carolina University Police charged Antonio Brady Shavon Smith, Jr., 24, with assault by pointing a gun, kidnapping, speeding to flee/elude arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding. Additionally, he was served with an existing warrant for felony probation violation.

At approximately 12:30 a.m., ECU Police conducted a traffic stop on a car driven by Smith for a speeding violation at Biltmore Street and Fourth Street in Greenville. When the officer attempted to approach the vehicle, the suspect sped away from the officer.

The officer followed the suspect who eventually stopped his vehicle on River Bluff Drive. The suspect exited the car and attempted to flee on foot and was quickly apprehended by ECU officers without further incident.

A female passenger in the car identified herself and said the suspect used a gun to force her into the vehicle. She is an acquaintance of the suspect and is not a student or employee at ECU.

Smith’s address is listed as Cedar Street in Belhaven and he is not an ECU student or employee.
