Summer Kenny looks forward to using her college experience to benefit the community she already calls home.
The Greenville native, 17, the daughter of Sean and Rhonda Kenny, is planning to extend her involvement in the groups and clubs she became passionate about in high school. She is also ready to pursue her professional passion - physical therapy.
"Someday, I would like to open my own outpatient physical therapy clinic in eastern North Carolina," Kenny said. She will major in exercise physiology and has already earned an early assurance spot in the physical therapy graduate program at ECU upon graduation, provided she continues to meet the academic requirements for it.
EC Scholars is the most prestigious undergraduate award program offered at ECU. The four-year merit scholarship recognizes outstanding academic performance, commitment to community engagement and strong leadership skills. Recipients receive an Honors College scholarship for four years, along with a stipend for study abroad, for a total value of almost $62,000.
Knowing her academic future is assured, Kenny is looking forward to taking advantage of all the opportunities provided by the EC Scholars program, including studying abroad.
"I plan to go to Australia to study physical therapy, specifically orthopedics," she said. "They have the Australian Physiotherapy Association there, and being able to get a broader education in another country would be incredible."
Kenny has plans to continue playing soccer through a club team and devote time to Riley's Army - an organization that provides support to children with cancer and their families in eastern North Carolina - which she has participated in since she was in middle school.
Attending college in her hometown has advantages, she said, because she knows what the community has to offer and will continue to explore ways she can make a difference here.
Over the summer, Kenny plans to visit Belize with friends and teachers and enjoy time with family before moving to campus in August. She will spend the rest of the days before the fall semester begins learning more about what awaits her at ECU.
"Being an EC Scholar means having numerous opportunities," she said, "and being able to take advantage of these opportunities during my time at ECU."
