'A Legacy of Leadership Week' to honor Chancellor Ballard
East Carolina University will host A Legacy of Leadership week on March 21-23 to spotlight a number of initiatives launched for faculty, staff and students during Chancellor Steve Ballard’s tenure. Ballard has announced that he will step down as chancellor on July 1.
Current and past senior leaders at ECU as well as from the University of North Carolina System and across the country will discuss leadership from personal and professional lenses.
All of the programs listed below are free and open to the campus and general public:
- Monday, March 21: 4 – 5:30 p.m. in Wright Auditorium, “Making Leadership a Part of the Fabric at a Public University.” Patricia Long, president emeritus at Baker University will speak about the need for public universities to integrate strong, effective leadership into day-to-day operations. Following her speech, Long will join the following panelists for a discussion:
- Carol Mabe, former member of the ECU Board of Trustees
- Philip Rogers, vice president of the American Council on Education and former chief of staff at ECU
- Randy Woodson, chancellor of North Carolina State University
- Tuesday, March 22: 4 – 5:30 p.m. at the East Carolina Heart Institute, “Transitional Leadership in Higher Education.” Tom Ross, president emeritus of the UNC System, will share insight about changes in higher education and the need for strong effective leadership during times of transition – nationally, system-wide and at ECU.
- Wednesday, March 23: 2 – 5 p.m. in Mendenhall Student Center, “A Vision of Leadership” will showcase different approaches to leadership and how varying philosophies can be successful in our organizations. This session will have a larger panel discussion followed by two concurrent sessions.
- 2 – 3:30 p.m., Mendenhall Student Center Great Room 1 – Plenary Discussion – “The Power of Teams,” featuring four of ECU’s current vice chancellors.

- 3:45 – 5 p.m., “Students Leading Change,” a panel discussion of current and past ECU Student Government Association presidents discussing the role of students in leading higher education as well as the increasing presence on campuses surrounding activism, civility and discourse.
