ECU graduate programs ranked among best for 2017
East Carolina University graduate programs in medicine, nursing and rehabilitation counseling have been ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report.
“These are extremely strong programs with outstanding faculty and highly qualified students,” said Dr. Phyllis Horns, vice chancellor for health sciences at ECU. “Graduates are committed to service, especially in North Carolina, but also across the nation.”
The Brody School of Medicine is ranked 32nd overall among primary care schools and 88th for research in U.S. News 2017 Graduate Schools.
More than half of Brody’s nearly 2,300 graduates have remained in North Carolina to practice. And almost 60 percent of Brody graduates remain in primary care five years after graduation – the highest percentage of any medical school in the state. Primary care is defined as family medicine, pediatrics and general internal medicine.
The ECU College of Nursing is ranked 88th out of 259 graduate nursing programs listed, while the concentration in nurse anesthesia is ranked 29th out of 112 programs and nurse midwifery is ranked 15th out of 39 programs across the country.
The masters of science in nursing program prepares students for advanced roles as clinical nurse specialists, neonatal nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists, nurse midwives, nurse educators and nurse administrators. This fall, 347 students were enrolled in master’s programs in the college.
The Doctor of Nursing Practice degree program is ranked 80th out of 149 programs surveyed.
In addition, the rehabilitation counseling program in the College of Allied Health Sciences’ Department of Addictions and Rehabilitation Studies is ranked 18th among such programs by U.S. News.
ECU offers master’s degrees in rehabilitation and career counseling, substance abuse counseling and clinical counseling. Students also can pursue certificates in rehabilitation counseling, substance abuse counseling, vocational evaluation and military and trauma counseling. The doctoral program in rehabilitation counseling and administration allows students to specialize in substance and clinical counseling, vocational evaluation or rehabilitation research.
Other ECU graduate programs listed in the annual guide and their rankings (some are from surveys taken in previous years): audiology, 53; biological sciences, 188; clinical psychology, 143; education, 140, fine arts, 104; occupational therapy, 88; physician assistant studies, 70; physical therapy, 46; public affairs, 146; social work, 141; and speech-language pathology, 92.
