The Campus Recreation and Wellness Adventure Program at East Carolina University will host the 16th annual Flatlander’s Fling Climbing Competition on Feb. 23 at the Student Recreation Center on campus.

The event is open to all climbers, regardless of ability level, and features bouldering and top rope competitions.

Registration for the top rope climbing competition begins at 9 a.m., and climbing registration begins at 10 a.m.  Registration for bouldering competition begins at 2 p.m. and bouldering begins at 3 p.m.

Amanda Sugg, a student staff member at Campus Recreation and Wellness said competitors from across the region are welcomed. “We reach out to most of the climbing gyms in North Carolina as well as several in Virginia.  In 2012, climbers from four different universities and two climbing clubs participated,” Sugg said.

Competition winners will be determined through a points system.  Prizes and giveaways will be awarded to participants in all categories.

The Flatlander’s Fling is a part of the 3rd annual Eastern Edge Climbing Series, hosted by Virginia Commonwealth University, Old Dominion University and East Carolina University.  Students climbing in two of the three competitions compete to win the series title for their school.

“ECU serves as the host site, but our goal is to promote a supportive climbing community, both here at ECU and across different schools,” said Campus Recreation and Wellness student staffer Matthew Schurtz

“Climbing is about challenges and pushing personal boundaries and the competition is the perfect place to meet down-to-earth people with the same passions for climbing,” he said.

The event is sponsored by Babit’s Bikes, Bicycle Post, East Coast Music & Video, ECU Adventure Program, ECU Campus Recreation & Wellness, Entre Prises Climbing Walls, Great Outdoor Provision Company, Mad Rock Climbing, Marathon Restaurant, Moose Jaw, Mountain Khakis, Prinz Climbing Holds, The Scullery, Sup Dogs, The Bookaneer BookStore, The Shoe Crate, The Sojourner and The Tipsy Teapot.

Registration for ECU faculty and staff and any college student is $20 with a valid college ID.  General public registration is $30 for adults and $20 for students under the age of 18. Spectators are welcome. Free food from local venues will also be provided.
