Student scholarship highlighted in ECU German language program
East Carolina University junior Michael Veale of Charlotte was selected for an undergraduate scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), marking the fourth year in a row that ECU’s German program has had a student selected for the scholarship.
Veale, a double major in theatre arts and German, is spending the academic year as a student at the Freie Universitat in Berlin.
ECU professor David L. Smith, majors’ advisor and program coordinator in the university’s German program, said ECU’s program is one of only five in the nation to have had an undergraduate receive the DAAD undergraduate award in each of the last four years, and the only program in the Southeast to do so.
Smith said the four scholarships represent approximately $45,000 in external funding for ECU undergraduates.
