AmeriCorps launch event set for Oct. 5

The N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service will swear in approximately 400 AmeriCorps members at the annual N.C. AmeriCorps Launch from 9 a.m. until 3:15 p.m Oct. 5 at Mendenhall Student Center, East Carolina University.

Of the new members being sworn in, 174 are ECU Project HEART participants, including high school and college students.

Former N.C. Commissioner Alice Keene, special projects coordinator of Pitt County Community Schools and Recreation, will swear in the new members.

The launch event will include one-on-one program coaching sessions, workshops, community service projects and program director’s training.

AmeriCorps is a national service initiative designed to amplify volunteering and civic engagement in America. Members’ duties include tutoring and mentoring school-aged youth, improving the quality of care for preschool children and addressing the need for energy efficient housing for low-income families.

The N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, a federally and state-funded agency housed in the Governor’s Office, administered funding to 11 N.C. AmeriCorps programs for the 2012-2013 program year. Since 1994, more than 13,000 individuals have participated in N.C. AmeriCorps programs.
