Earth Day events planned at ECU

Several events are planned this week on the campus of East Carolina University to mark Earth Day. All events are free and open to the public.

  • Author and conservation biologist Joe Roman will speak about threatened species, the people working to save them, and why the extinction of species matters to our health and safety, our prosperity, and our joy in nature. Roman is the author of “Listed:  Dispatches from America’s Endangered Species Act.”His lecture will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 19 in the Science & Technology Building, Room C307. Contact: N.C.   • The documentary, “Tapped,” which explores the issues surrounding the bottled water industry and the privatization of water. The film will be shown 12-1:30 p.m. Friday, April 20 in Joyner Library Presentation Practice Room #1415.
  • Earth Day Expo will be held Saturday at several locations, including the Howell Science Center, the West Research Campus and A Time for Science center. The day’s activities are part of the N.C. Science Festival. Contact: N.C. Center for Biodiversity, 328-6718.From 10 a.m.- 1p.m., interactive exhibits from ECU faculty will be available for children and their families at the Howell Science Center on ECU’s main campus. There will be hands-on activities, tours of biology labs and exhibits of environmentally focused local organizations.On the West Research campus from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., children will be able to learn more about bird boxes and plants and to tour the Queen Anne’s Revenge Conservation Lab during its open house. The West Research Campus is located at 1157 VOA Site C Road, Greenville.And from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at a Time for Science Center, near Ayden, nature walks and pond exploration will be available.
