Twelfth annual ECU Neuroscience Symposium to be Nov. 2

GREENVILLE, N.C.    —   Research on the connections between alcohol and neural development will be a highlight of the 12th annual East Carolina University Neuroscience Symposium on Nov. 2.

The daylong event will be at the East Carolina Heart Institute at East Carolina University. It’s free and open to the public. Opening remarks are at 8:30 a.m., and the event lasts until 4 p.m.

Dr. Sandra Kelley, professor of psychology at the University of South Carolina, will deliver the keynote lecture on the effects of alcohol on neural development.

Speakers ECU and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington will also cover the latest information regarding how sensory hair cells in the cochlea, the mammalian hearing organ, are regulated by neurotransmitter receptors and ion channels; the molecular mechanisms involved in sensory dysfunction following spinal cord injury; and more.

The program is jointly sponsored by the Eastern Carolina chapter of the Society for Neuroscience, the Harriet and John Wooten Laboratory of Alzheimer’s Disease and Neurodegenerative Disease Research, the ECU Department of Emergency Medicine and the N.C. Biotechnology Center.
