ECU Physicians names pair to leadership posts
A new executive director and a new director of nursing have been named at ECU Physicians.
Brian Jowers will lead the group medical practice of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University as executive director. He comes to ECU from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, where he was associate dean for administration and finance and secretary/treasurer of the school’s medical faculty practice plan.

Jowers has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Charleston Southern University and a master’s degree in business and management from Webster University in St. Louis.
“In my opinion, it could be one of the premier multi-subspecialty practice plans in the Southeast,” Jowers said of ECU Physicians. “I see a lot of energy in this place. I see a lot of good, smart physicians.”
Dr. Nicholas Benson, acting medical director of ECU Physicians, said the school is glad to have Jowers on the team. “He brings very rich experience from the University of South Carolina’s clinical practice,” Benson said. “His expertise with business development, contract negotiations and financial management will be tremendous resources for ECU Physicians.”
Martha Dartt has been named director of nursing services for ECU Physicians. She previously was associate director of risk management at the medical school. Dartt has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from ECU and a master’s in nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked in a variety of nursing and administrative positions.
“I am very honored and excited to have been chosen as the director of nursing,” Dartt said. “I am fortunate to have been at Brody School of Medicine through the incredible expansions and successes of the last 20 years, and I look forward to contributing in any way I can to our continued service to eastern North Carolina.”
Benson called Dartt compassionate, committed and enthusiastic. “She is the ideal director of nursing services because she brings unrelenting energy to a role with innumerable details and extensive broad-scope responsibilities. She has just the right skills for this job,” Benson said.
