High school students, future health care leaders from across state attend conference at ECU

More than 250 high school students from across North Carolina are expected this weekend at the ninth annual Future Leaders in Health Care conference to be held at East Carolina University.

The conference, May 30-June 1, is offered to students with an interest in health care careers participating in the North Carolina Area Health Education Centers Health Careers and Workforce Diversity programs.

The theme for this year’s conference, “Plug Into Health Careers: Technology in Health Care,” will include sessions on telemedicine, electronic medical records, SpeechEasy technology, virtual technology in nursing education, biofeedback and others.

Students will begin arriving Friday afternoon at College Hill Suites before an opening session at the Murphy Center Friday night. The conference continues Saturday at the Brody School of Medicine and the Health Sciences Building from 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Students will learn about telemedicine, prosthetics and orthotics and pharmacy automation. They will tour and interact in the College of Allied Health Sciences’ communication science and disorders lab and the College of Nursing’s concept integration labs.

Sunday topics will include the biofeedback and psychophysiology lab, environmental health and methods in athletic training in the College of Health and Human Performance in the Belk Building followed by the closing session.

The conference is sponsored by the North Carolina AHEC program in collaboration with the Brody School of Medicine in partnership with ECU’s colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Health and Human Performance and Nursing.
