Internal medicine research day to be May 29
The annual research day in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University has been named for longtime faculty member Dr. Yash P. Kataria.
The event will be held May 29 at the Health Sciences Building from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Presentations will be in Room 1150, and scientific posters will be in Room 1102. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Phil Bromberg, Bonner Professor of Medicine, scientific director of the Center for Environmental Medicine, Asthma and Lung Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Kataria’s mentor.

The night before, a dinner in Kataria’s honor will be held at the Greenville Hilton beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Further plans are to raise $100,000 to endow the research day, and the Medical & Health Sciences Foundation of ECU is a third of the way toward that goal.
Kataria, a pulmonologist, has been on the ECU medical faculty since 1978, when he arrived as associate professor and section head of pulmonary and critical care medicine. He rose to professor in 1982. Since 1995, he has been director of the sarcoidosis clinic at ECU and has gained recognition as a worldwide leader in the causes and treatment of this mysterious respiratory disease, which is prevalent in the Southeast. Kataria, now professor emeritus, sees outpatients and is active in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
He began the internal medicine annual research day in 1987 during a stint as interim department chairman. Kataria has published more than 70 scholarly articles.
“My personal commitment has always been the tripartite goal of excellent patient care, education and training of future doctors who will carry the torch, and investigation into diseases that are relevant to our patients and population,” Kataria wrote recently, recalling his years at ECU.
He has a medical degree from Glancy Medical College in India and trained in England, Wales, at Ohio State University and at Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center in Chicago. Kataria’s wife, Sudesh, is a professor of pediatrics.
