ECU Names interim police chief

GREENVILLE, NC  —   Janice Harris was appointed interim chief of the East Carolina University Police Department.

Harris, who will replace Chief Robert Stroud, will take her position May 1, said Marilyn Sheerer, ECU’s vice chancellor for student life.

Stroud submitted his resignation as of April 30, 2007.

Harris is a retired captain with the Greenville Police Department and came to the ECU Police in 2006, Sheerer said.

“She has also been serving as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee and is looking forward to again assuming a leadership position,” she said.

A search committee to hire a permanent chief has been organized, said Sheerer, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police will assist in conducting the search.
