N.C. General Assembly coming to ECU to honor 100th on March 8
GREENVILLE, NC — The North Carolina General Assembly will hold a joint session in Greenville on March 8 to commemorate the establishment of a teacher training school in eastern North Carolina a century ago.
That training school became today’s East Carolina University with more than 24,000 students. Education remains an important part of ECU, which today prepares more teaching professionals for North Carolina schools than any other institution.
The legislators will convene at 10:30 a.m. in Wright Auditorium and are expected to consider a resolution honoring the university.
“The university is honored that on this 100th anniversary the General Assembly will be on the campus of this great institution that it created 100 years ago,” said Chancellor Steve Ballard. “We are proud to welcome them, and we invite the public to join us at ECU in witnessing this historic joint session.”
After the joint session, the ECU Board of Trustees, administrators, faculty and staff, the legislators and guests will move outside for a preview ceremony for the Trustees Fountain in Wright Circle. Construction on the fountain continues with completion anticipated in the spring.
Dinner on the Grounds will follow around noon; the Chancellor’s Forum on Service will begin at 3 p.m. in Hendrix Theatre. The forum will focus on the importance of public service and volunteerism.
The following week, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors will meet at ECU on March 15 and 16.
