Women’s Health Conference slated March 1-3 in Atlantic Beach
GREENVILLE, N.C. — New therapeutic and technological advances in the health care of women will be discussed in a conference set for March 1-3 in Atlantic Beach.
The annual Women’s Health Conference of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University provides up-to-date practical clinical information on new diagnostic procedures, current therapeutic protocols and research advances that impact diagnosis and therapy. Multi-specialty course faculty will provide the latest findings and interpretations including clarifying ongoing controversies in many areas of women’s health.
Diseases and conditions that manifest themselves differently in women, that affect women disproportionately and those that place women at greater risk than men will be highlighted.
Topics will include family planning, heart disease, lung cancer, end-of-life care, osteoporosis, acupuncture, HIV, HPV vaccine, eating disorders, menopause, pregnancy and elective Caesarean sections, metabolic syndrome and facial rejuvenation.
“Our conference strives to promote a dialogue among participants. Collaboration strengthens our learning and creates change in clinical practice,” said program director Dr. David G. Weismiller, associate professor and vice chair of the department of family medicine in the Brody School of Medicine. “We focus on the partnership in health care that women expect. The imperative for the Women’s Health Conference has never been stronger.”
Faculty presenters are Dr. Susan Bane, clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology and adjunct assistant professor of exercise and sports science; Dr. Dorothy Butler, associate clinical professor and director of women’s health in the department of family medicine; Dr. C. Sage Claydon, urogynecologist and assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology; Dr. Fiona Cook, clinical associate professor of endocrinology in the department of internal medicine; Dr. Janice Daugherty, associate professor of family medicine and director of the division of pre-doctoral education; Dr. Joseph Franklin of Greenville Plastic Surgery; Dr. C. Calvin “Cal” Hayslip Jr., associate professor and division director of reproductive endocrinology and infertility in the department of obstetrics and gynecology; Dr. George Ho Jr., professor of rheumatology and vice chair of academic affairs and faculty development in the department of internal medicine; Dr. Gwendolyn Knuckles, women’s health center of Greenville; Dr. M. Suzanne Kraemer, associate clinical professor and program director of internal medicine; Dr. Edward R. Newton, chair and professor of obstetrics and gynecology; Catherine Sullivan, affiliate faculty and breastfeeding coordinator in the nutrition services branch in the women’s and children’s health section in the Division of Public Health in the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services; Dr. Robert J. Tanenberg, professor of endocrinology and director of the diabetes and obesity center; Dr. R. Frederick Williams Jr., clinical associate professor of general and thoracic surgery in the department of surgery. Butler, Claydon and Mary Valand, director of continuing medical education, served on the conference planning committee.

The conference is designed to meet the continuing medical education needs of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and other health professionals involved in the management of women’s health.
