ECU seniors selected as nursing leadership interns

GREENVILLE  —   Two seniors have been selected as nursing leadership interns by the East Carolina Center for Nursing Leadership in the East Carolina University School of Nursing.

Anthony Huang of New London and Melonie Norman of Yadkinville each will receive a $500 stipend and will attend the North Carolina Nurses Association annual meeting Oct. 11-13 in Winston-Salem. The NCNA is the professional association for registered nurses in North Carolina.

The students will have the opportunity to shadow several nursing leaders during the semester including Polly Johnson, executive director of the N.C. Board of Nursing, and Brenda Cleary, executive director of the N.C. Center for Nursing.

ECU’s nursing leadership intern program is funded by a grant from BB&T. The mission of the East Carolina Center for Nursing Leadership is to mobilize nurses to be effective partners and leaders in creating healthier communities in eastern North Carolina.

Huang and Norman were selected from 21 applicants to receive the internship. Applicants submitted a resume, letter of reference and essay on why nursing leadership is an important element of baccalaureate nurse education. The center is inspiring students to become future leaders in nursing, said Elaine Scott, assistant professor and director of the master’s of science in nursing leadership concentration.
