Congressman Butterfield to hold Health Awareness Day on June 1 at ECU

GREENVILLE  —   United States Congressman G.K. Butterfield will hold a health awareness day June 1 on the East Carolina University Health Sciences Campus. Along with Butterfield, ECU experts on diabetes, health disparities, infectious disease and oral health will participate. Health screenings also will be available.

After opening remarks at 9 a.m. from Butterfield and Dr. Michael J. Lewis, vice chancellor for health sciences at ECU, a program with four panel discussions will begin focusing on health problems affecting eastern North Carolina. A health walk around Lake Laupus and lunch will follow those discussions.

From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., health screenings conducted by ECU physician-faculty members will be available for attendees in the Brody Medical Sciences Building.

“The congressman’s concerns for the health of the citizens of his district dovetails with the concerns of the university and medical school and its mission to improve the health of our region. Those topics will be discussed during the panel discussions with much audience input, we hope, so we’ll have an in-depth dialogue,” said Al Delia, director of federal relations at ECU and who has worked with the congressman’s office to organize the event.

Butterfield represents the 1st Congressional District of North Carolina, which has 600,000 people in its 23 counties.

All events during the health awareness day are free and open to the public. The panel discussions will be held under a large tent adjacent to Lake Laupus, on the same side of the lake as the new health sciences building complex. Visitor parking will be available and designated.

Corporate sponsors for the event are Eli Lilly and Co., University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina, and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA).
