Garrie Moore to step down as head of student life

Dr. Garrie W. Moore, vice chancellor for student life at East Carolina University, announced today (April 4) that he will step down from that position and become a special assistant to the chancellor, effective July 1.

Moore, who has served more than 30 years in higher education in North Carolina, joined ECU in 1998 as director of equal employment opportunity and has been vice chancellor since September 1999. He oversees all non-academic areas of the student experience, including housing and dining, recreation and intramural sports, student health services, career services, and testing and counseling.

Chancellor Steve Ballard said, “Garrie Moore has been a stalwart leader on this campus. Since I arrived in Greenville, I have depended on his advice and ability and his willingness to take on the hard jobs. His influence is known throughout the campus and the community, and I am just glad that he has given me a few months to get used to the idea that he will be resigning.”

Moore said that he has tremendously enjoyed his work at the university, and this is a natural time to step down.

“We have reached a turning point in several areas,” he said. “The academic achievements of our students are at their highest point ever. A number of important student-related construction projects, including a new residence hall and new recreation fields, are getting under way or nearing completion. And the university is making great progress in its commitment to enhancing diversity on the campus.”

Moore lauded Ballard’s commitment to students. “You genuinely care about student success, your staff and the university,” he wrote to Ballard, noting that ECU is “moving in a positive direction.”

Moore said he looks forward to taking on special projects for Ballard until the end of this year, when he will retire from the university. He also said he plans to continue his service to the university and to the community in outreach, diversity and under-served areas in the region.

Moore holds a bachelor’s degree from ECU and master’s and doctoral degrees from North Carolina State University. Before joining the university he was dean of students at Pitt Community College.

Ballard said that a nationwide search will be conducted to identify candidates for Moore’s position.
