ECU hosts march, activities for sexual assault awareness week

East Carolina University will hold a “Take Back the Night” rally tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in observance of Sexual Assault Awareness Week. The march begins at Belk Hall on College Hill and ends at Joyner Library. A Candlelight Vigil will be held at the library.
“Take Back the Night is intended to raise students’ awareness of sexual assault issues,” said Suzanne Molhan, a sexual assault victim advocate at ECU’s Counseling Center. “This event often evokes difficult emotions for some people.”

Activities designed to promote awareness about sexual assault will be held all week.

• At 8 p.m. Sept. 20, two counselors and a police officer will discuss sexual assault on college campus at the Wright Building, Room 312.

• At 6 p.m. Sept. 21, students will paint T-shirts for the Clothesline Project and make bracelets at Mendenhall Student Center, followed by a self-defense training class at 7 p.m. ECU Police Officer Janel Drake will teach self defense techniques.

• 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 22: A sexual assertiveness workshop for women will be held at ECU’s Student Health Center (second floor conference room).

• 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sept. 23: A counselor facilitated group session will be held for survivors and friends of survivors in a discussion called “Breaking the Silence” in the multipurpose room of the Student Health Center.
