Physical therapy clinic opens at Firetower Medical Office
ECU Physical Therapy, a new outpatient orthopedic physical therapy clinic, has opened at ECU Physicians Firetower Medical Office on Fire Tower Road in Winterville.
The clinic, owned by East Carolina University’s Department of Physical Therapy in the School of Allied Health Sciences, provides comprehensive rehabilitation and treatment of sports and orthopedic injuries. Common injuries include ligament strains, muscle sprains and tendonitis, joint bursitis, osteoarthritis and cartilage injuries.
“We strive to return patients to their previous functional levels, emphasizing quality of care,” said physical therapist Kevin Youngs, who serves as the clinic director.
In addition to Youngs, there are three staff members: Dr. Denis Brunt, administrator and chairman of the physical therapy department; and Drs. Walt Jenkins and Blaise Williams, physical therapists and consultants.
Jenkins, associate professor in the department, is nationally recognized for his expertise in rehabilitation of sports-related injuries. He serves as the physical therapy consultant for ECU’s athletic department and is vice president for the sports physical therapy section of the American Physical Therapy Association.
Williams is an assistant professor and nationally recognized for his expertise on running mechanics and injuries. He is chairman of the biomechanics interest group of the American College of Sports Medicine. Williams is also a consultant to the ECU School of Theater and Dance.
The clinic also serves as an educational setting for medical and physical therapy students who shadow licensed physical therapists as they treat patients.
Clinic hours are 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday. Patients are typically referred by their physicians, but may be seen without a referral.
The location is convenient for patients who see multiple health care members. In addition to physical therapy, the Firetower Medical Office provides primary medical care, sports medicine, imaging, stress testing, psychology and laboratory services.
