Sheerer names interim vice chancellor

Marilyn Sheerer, dean of the College of Education at East Carolina University, has been named interim vice chancellor for advancement, effective June 1.

Sheerer, who will continue her duties as dean, will oversee the Division of University Advancement until a permanent vice chancellor is chosen, probably in the fall semester. The division includes fund-raising, alumni, marketing and communication offices.

She will succeed Bill Shelton, who announced in February that he planned to move to the College of Education this summer to work with a program designed to train future community college leaders.

Chancellor Steve Ballard said, “Dean Sheerer is an immensely capable leader who is respected and admired throughout the campus. She will provide first-rate guidance for the division, and I am grateful that she has agreed to take on these additional duties.” Sheerer, who has served as dean since 1998, has been instrumental in notable successes in fund-raising, including a $2 million federal grant to ECU in 2003 and a $1.25 million gift from Wachovia last year.
