Sallye Mckee appointed to diversity post

Sallye McKee, a successful leader in higher education diversity efforts, has been named assistant to the chancellor for institutional diversity at East Carolina University.

McKee, currently associate vice provost for urban and educational outreach at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus, will join ECU on July 1.

She will be the first person to occupy the new position, which is designed to advise university leaders on issues of diversity and to play a critical role in crafting the university’Sallye McKee is vision.

Chancellor Steve Ballard, announcing her selection, said, “Sallye McKee is an outstanding leader who will help us realize the potential of East Carolina. She will make a difference on our campus, and I am tremendously excited about this appointment.

“Dr. McKee received enthusiastic support during the selection process. All the vice chancellors have expressed unequivocal support for her appointment, and they are excited about working with her. We are pleased but not surprised to get our candidate of first choice and bring someone of national stature to ECU.”

McKee, who will be a member of the chancellor’s executive council, will be responsible for developing a campus-wide diversity plan, addressing structural inequities, and implementing strategies to recruit and retain diverse faculty, staff and students.

Before joining the University of Minnesota, McKee was associate provost for multicultural affairs at the University of Denver. Previously she was a vice provost at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

She holds a Ph.D. from Minnesota in curriculum and instruction/educational psychology; an M.S.T. from the University of Chicago in elementary education; and a B.A. from Morris Brown College in French and secondary education.
