ECU breaks ground on new residence hall

(Oct. 29, 2004)   —   East Carolina University leaders on Friday broke ground for a new residence hall on College Hill. About 100 members of the university and extended community attended the celebratory tilling of earth next to Todd Dining Hall on College Hill, where the building is slated for a fall 2006 completion. “This university is poised to really move forward very strongly and very positively,” said Jim Talton, chairman of the ECU Board of Trustees. Chancellor Steve Ballard thanked the crowd of community dignitaries, elected representatives, students, faculty and staff. East Carolina University’s residence halls house more than 5,100 students. The new residence hall is part of a long-term expansion program for on-campus student housing. The 488-bed residence hall will include:

  • 2 bedroom, 4 student suites with semi-kitchenettes in each suite
  • 2 private baths for each suite
  • Data ports and cable in every student room and suite living room
  • Noise resistant walls and floors
  • Full kitchen, recycling and laundry facilities on each floor

“Our university is growing and we can’t control that, but we can get ready,” said Garrie Moore, vice chancellor for student life. “We are responding to the needs of the university and our students.”
