Five ECU grads awarded for academics, service

GREENVILLE, NC   (Apr. 15, 2004)   —   Five students have been chosen to receive the Robert H. Wright Alumni Leadership Award, which is the most prestigious award presented to seniors during ECU’s commencement.

The winners are: Drew Edward Davis of Weddington, Gail T. Kennedy of Wilson’s Mills, Daphne Melvina Harrington of Greenville, Kevin Michael Lamm of Wilson and Leanne Elizabeth Smith of Greenville.

The award recognizes outstanding achievement in academics as well as service. This year’s recipients were recognized by the president of the Alumni Association during the May 8, 2004 commencement.

Davis, an economics major with a minor in business administration, plans to attend Brody School of Medicine at ECU in the fall. He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards over his college career, including the Brody School of Medicine Early Assurance Scholarship in 2000.

Kennedy is an elementary education major. She has volunteered in numerous capacities, including tutoring at W.H. Robinson Elementary School and volunteering for Read Across America.

Harrington will receive a bachelor’s degree in applied physics and mathematics with a minor in biology. She will attend Brody School of Medicine at ECU. Her volunteering endeavors include work at the Habitat for Humanity of Pitt County, the Diabetes Association and the Pitt County Humane Society.

Lamm is an economics major with a minor in business. He will also attend the Brody School of Medicine after graduation. He participates in volunteer activities for Meals on Wheels and the Relay for Life.

Smith is an English major with a minor in French. Smith’s collegiate activities include participation in numerous organizations, including the ECU Poetry Forum, where she was president, the ECU International Language Organization and the Friends of Joyner Library. Her service activities include volunteering for the Family Violence Program, the Department of Social Services and the Music Academy of Eastern Carolina.
