Work for chancellor search complete

GREENVILLE, NC   (Mar. 8, 2004)   —   The East Carolina University Board of Trustees completed its discussions on candidates to fill the chancellor’s position and forwarded a list of names to University of North Carolina President Molly Corbett Broad.

The board conducted an hour-long closed meeting by conference call Monday, March 8 after recessing its deliberations on Friday, March 5.

Jim Talton, chairman of the board, said, “We have reached a conclusion on our recommendation to President Broad, and I will be talking to her tomorrow.” He declined to reveal the names of candidates the board has endorsed or to say how many names were on the board’s list.

“Both the Search Committee and the board were very pleased with the process and with the quality of the candidates,” Talton said. “I think the East Carolina campus, friends and supporters will be delighted when President Broad announces her selection.”

President Broad is expected to present her nomination for chancellor to the UNC Board of Governors for action at the March 19 board meeting.

The search for a new chancellor formally began with the appointment of a 13-member search committee in October following the resignation of Chancellor William V. Muse in September. Bill Shelton is serving as interim chancellor.

The committee, which Talton led, received dozens of applications and nominations. It held initial interviews with seven candidates and invited three finalists to the campus for more interviews last week. The committee then recommended a group of finalists to the board for its consideration. President Broad had asked for a list of three finalists.
