ECU panel aims for March completion

The East Carolina University Chancellor Search Committee will aim to have its work done by March, the panel’s chairman says.

Jim Talton of Raleigh, chair of the committee and of the ECU Board of Trustees, said, “We’re working on a short timeline, but we have a very important responsibility.”

The committee held its first meeting Oct. 11 to receive its charge from University of North Carolina President Molly Corbett Broad.

“I don’t think you should settle for less than the best available candidate in the country,” Broad told committee members. “We want the next chancellor to be here a very long time.” Dr. William V. Muse resigned last month after serving two years as ECU chancellor. Dr. Bill Shelton, vice chancellor for university advancement at ECU and former president of Eastern Michigan University, is serving as interim chancellor.

Talton said the committee will meet again soon to determine timelines, budget and protocols.
