ECU plans military speaker series

Retired U.S. Air Force Col. Tom Lyon will kick off East Carolina University’s Military Speakers Bureau Series at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5, in room C207 of the new Science and Technology Building.

Lyon, a decorated veteran of both the Vietnam and Desert Storm conflicts, will compare the shift in public sentiment between the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm from a soldier’s point of view. He will also discuss how the Vietnam War shaped national policy and military requirements.

The new lecture series includes two other speakers this fall.

On Friday, Oct. 24, retired Maj. Bob Dahn, a double Silver Star recipient and a Korean and Vietnam veteran, will speak about the legacy of the Korean War.

On Veteran’s Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, Dr. C.W. Curris, president of the American Association of Colleges and Universities, will address the unique challenges that colleges and universities face in providing education to American servicemen and women.

The lectures, presented by ECU’s Office of Military Programs, are free and open to the public. They will begin at 3 p.m. in Room C207 of the new Science and Technology building. Parking and shuttle service is available at Minges Coliseum.
