ECU receives NCAA Certification

East Carolina University’s intercollegiate athletics program has received certification from the NCAA, signifying that the university’s program conforms with NCAA principles.

Certification, which is valid for 10 years, is meant to insure integrity in the university’s athletics program and to assist the institution in improving its athletics department, according to the NCAA.

The certification process is a self-study that includes a review of governance and commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, fiscal integrity, equity, welfare and sportsmanship. All 325 active NCAA Division I members participate in the certification process.

Chancellor William V. Muse said, “I am pleased that our athletics program has met all of the requirements for certification by the NCAA. This is just another indication of ECU’s strength and quality in this area.”

An NCAA certification team, led by Dr. Bernard Machen, president of the University of Utah, spent nearly a week on the ECU campus in March 2002. After the campus visit, the NCAA certification process normally takes more than a year to complete.

While at ECU, Machen said that the report prepared by his team was complimentary to the university. “I think you should be very proud of this report,” Machen said. “I think you have a good thing going.”
