Distinguished professor to discuss “transforming knowledge”

GREENVILLE, NC   (Oct. 18, 2001)   —   Dr. Elizabeth Minnich, East Carolina University’s new Whichard Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, will explore the meaning of scholarship as it relates to truth and justice in a public program on Oct. 30. 

Her presentation entitled “Transforming Knowledge, Transforming Democracy” will be given at 7:30 p.m. in Room 1028 of the Bate (General Classroom) Building. A reception will follow. Minnich, a philosopher and author of the awarding-winning book “Transforming Knowledge” joined ECU this semester under an endowed professorship. She teaches a women’s studies course entitled “Thinking Women: Philosophy, Politics, Morality.” This will be her first public presentation. Before arriving at ECU, Minnich worked and studied under philosopher Hannah Arendt. She has also studied history, language and art in Italy and is the recipient of two Fullbright fellowships for research and presentations in India and Australia. She holds a doctorate in philosophy from The New School in New York. Her professorship is endowed by the Whichard family of Greenville in honor of newspaper publishers David Julian and Virginia Suther Whichard. The College of Arts and Sciences chooses recipients of the professorships. Minnich teaches for the Women’s Studies Program.
